How to Find Us!

See map here. Truckee, CA is right off of Interstate 80. Our store is very close to a huge assortment of world class mountain bike singletrack trails, road bike routes, and bike paths. You can even start your ride from our store and get on excellent singletrack 1 mile from us! Stop in for the local trail map and personal recommendations. We'll help you plan the perfect bike ride for your group, and we're a great source for energy food and recommendations for places to eat and things to do after your ride.

Photos of our local riding areas can be found on our website messageboard here: The Backcountry's Cycling discussion forum

Some of our local Mountain Bike Rides:

Tahoe Rim Trail, Donner Lake Rim Trail, Hole in the Ground, Sawtooth Ridge, Emigrant Trail, Coldstream Canyon, JP's, Lloyd's, Dirty Harry, Paige Meadows, Scott Peak, Mt. Watson, The Flume Trail, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, General Creek, Stanford Rock, and TONS MORE! We are also lucky to be halfway between some great off-season riding in the Reno area and in the Sierra foothills around Nevada City.

Some popular Road Bike Routes:

Around Lake Tahoe (72 miles), Truckee Triangle (52 miles), Blackwood Canyon (climbs 7 miles and 1500'), Alpine Meadows Road (climbs 5 miles and 1000'), Tahoe Donner - Alder Creek Loop, Donner Summit to Cisco Grove, Jackson Meadows Resevoir...

Not-So-Serious Riding

Beautiful bike paths run parallel to the Truckee river and Lake Tahoe. Perfect for a mellow cruise with your friends and family. There are plenty of places to stop for lunch and sit by the water. A very popular ride is from our Tahoe City rental location almost entirely on bike paths by the river to the Village in Squaw Valley for lunch and back. Or head down the West Shore from our Tahoe City location and ride right along beautiful Lake Tahoe for 11 miles, or head up quiet and scenic Blackwood Canyon.

Great mellow rides from our Truckee store include checking out Old Town Truckee and the river and railroad scenery for a three-mile loop, or riding over to Donner Lake and/or Donner State Park and back for anywhere from one to five miles with possible summer swimming. Donner Lake is only a half mile from us, practically across the street!

We are only 30 minutes from Reno Airport and a 2 hour drive from Sacramento.

Discounts

10% off for 3 day rental, 15% off for 4 days or more. 15% discount for groups of 8 people or more.

Special arrangements

Email mike@thebackcountry.net if you need more than a few speciality items. With some advance notice, I can sometimes bring in extra gear for your party. I'll also be happy to help you plan your adventures in any way!

Reservations

We avoid making reservations because we cannot control when the previous person returns the equipment, and would never wish to have your reservation missing at pickup time. This allows us to treat everyone with more flexibility. However, our rental fleet is large and bikes are typically out for only a half or full day, and we will almost always have several good choices in your size. If you require an equipment reservation to make your trip possible (such as a guided trip or a class, or just have very tight scheduling), call or email ahead and we will do our best to work with you.

Rates and Time Periods

Rates are hourly, or you save more for a half day (4 hours) or full day. A full day is opening to closing (8:30am-6pm), not 24hrs. If you keep rental bikes overnight on a 1-day rental there is a late return fee equal to one hour charge. Overnight fees are waived for multi-day rentals.

Equipment

Our rental and demo bikes are kept in good condition, and from top name brand manufacturers. We make sure they have good tires, brake pads, grips, etc... We can swap seats to your liking! We can also provide a repair kit and map upon request, though these are normally not included. Locks are not provided (they tend to never come back).

Support

We can make special arrangements to support a ride for you, but otherwise you are on your own and should carry flat-fixing supplies, emergency cash, anything else you need for your outing.

n/aChild seats for bikes: we sell these but do not rent them, as they create a much higher level of responsibility and safety concern on mountain roads and highways. We strongly encourage the use of our child trailers -- they are easy to pull and a joy for kids to ride in.

Delivery / Guides / Etc.

We can arrange to deliver bicycles for your group with our specially equipped van! No group is too large... at times we have up to 50 rental bikes available! We are also equipped to shuttle you and your friends to a ride. We can drop you off at starting points thousands of feet above our store or above Lake Tahoe level, for a great ride back down on roads or awesome singletrack. If you are interested please call or email us in advance. We also can recommend guides or instructors for your group, or caterers or other services for a bicycle-based event. Feel free to dream up any outing and let us fit all the pieces together for you! Just let us know what you need.
