Skied the Negatives out of June Lake on Wednesday, 1/26. About 18 inches of snow and sensitive snow stability up high. In fact, both routes we ski cut went for over 1200' vert, we skied the bed surface for awhile, then the lower angle powder was safe and excellent. If you can finagle a way up June Mtn. lifts, you get about 4,000' vert with about an hour and a half of work.

what's the route for the negatives (esp from top of June Mtn lifts)? I haven't been able to find any route descriptions on the Web.

Ride 3 lifts at June, go straight off top lift, duck the rope, follow the 10 minute traverse, put skins on, climb about an hour, and you are on top. After skiing the first 2000' vert you ski across the flats for about 10 minutes (follow the track) and then you get 2,000' more vert of good tree skiing. Leaving a car at The Carson Peak Motel or Double Eagle Lodge is the easiest way or a hitch hike back to the area. The trees are getting thin down low, so go soon if you are going!

Skied the Negatives on Tuesday March 1. There was alot of loading (South winds 25-35 mph) going on off the top and was able to get a small slab (6-8") to go. Seemed the failure was overnight loading, not the new snow from the previous night as the bed surface was still nice soft snow. After that it was safe, with staying close to north being 12" or so of medium density powder. Seemed as though the textured stuff skied best. The lower 2G (4 seasons) was all time. And the coverage around June is over 10+ feet!
Saw some tracks in Pete's Dream (Carson Peak) a slab at the very top over that exposure must have made those bro brahs think twice, or maybe not. Seems people are definetly pushing it in questionable snowpack stability conditions, or maybe I'm just a puss. Rock On!
PS If you are feeling like a refresher, get a day pass to Double Eagle and use the spa, steam room, etc. The place is top notch and sweet on the tooled body!
