This is an amazing spot just south of Mammoth. Turn off 395 at Tom's Place, but don't go up Rock Creek Canyon. MgGee Creek Canyon is right there too, where there used to be a chairlift going up Mt. MgGee. I forget the details, but I think this was one of the earliest ski areas in the US, and was ditched when Mammoth Mountain was built. Trailhead starts at 7840'.
Only got a few miles in with my kids, but this is a great spot to show people for fall colors. We went about 2-3 miles in to the point where Horsetail Falls comes through the trail. The trail doesn't climb very much, and goes behind MgGee Mountain, Mt. Morrison, Mt. Baldwin, Mt. Aggie and Red Slate Mountain. Not real crowded, and great USFS camping at the bottom.
The trail follows MgGee Creek for about 6 miles, up to MgGee Pass, at Grass Lake and Steelhead Lake. It got more and more beautiful, and I'll definately be back to finish this one.
first shot shows Esha Peak. The trail doesn't go up the Esha canyon, but more westerly and behind it.
